Buying non-running cars
A non-runner may have a known fault or may not have been tested at all. Ask why it is being sold and whether the seller has tried to diagnose the problem. Keys, battery condition and access to the vehicle affect recovery. Loading checks describe whether the car rolls, steers and brakes; they do not establish roadworthiness.
- Confirm whether keys are present and whether the car starts intermittently or never starts.
- Check that the vehicle is accessible to a recovery truck and ask about seized brakes or locked steering.
- Agree a suitable collection method and budget for diagnosis before making an offer.
