HOW BAJ MOTORS WORKS
Asking prices. Direct contact. No auction fees.
BAJ Motors is a UK marketplace for crash-damaged cars, mechanical faults, non-runners, MOT failures, repair projects, good working cars and dealer part-exchanges. Insurance buy-backs are one dedicated section. Sellers set an asking price; buyers contact them directly. There are no bids, no buyer fees and no commission.
Public browsing, early access
- Anyone can browse ordinary car adverts. Basic listings and buying are free; no payment is taken anywhere on the site.
- Every car has its own shareable page. Ordinary listings open without signing in; trade-only adverts still need approved trade access.
- The cars marked “Example · not for sale” are fictional, with AI illustrations, to show the listing format.
- BAJ Motors is a web app. It works in your phone’s browser and can be added to your home screen. There is no App Store or Google Play app.
- Accounts use ChatGPT sign-in followed by a short BAJ profile. A profile is needed to publish listings, save cars, send buy-back offers or apply for trade access. Marketing is optional.
For buyers
- Search by keyword, condition and price. Add your full postcode to sort by distance — distances are approximate straight-line miles, not driving routes.
- Open a car to see the photos, faults, write-off category, running status and collection arrangements, then press “Show seller’s number” to contact the seller.
- Everything on a listing is provided by the seller. BAJ Motors does not inspect, value or certify cars, and does not check write-off or MOT records.
- If the seller gave a registration you can check its MOT history on GOV.UK.
For sellers
- Listing is free. Add an honest description of every known fault and how the car can be collected.
- Photos follow a 12-view checklist: all four corners, front, back and both sides, the dashboard and mileage, the front seats, the engine bay and the damage or problem area. You need at least 8 photos. For any view you can’t take, give a short reason, such as “no visible damage, the fault is electrical”. Never start or move a damaged car just to take a photo.
- “Help me write this” asks a few questions and lays out a description using only your answers. It’s a fixed template, not AI, and it doesn’t check anything. You can edit the result or write your own.
- The number you enter in the phone field is only shown when a buyer presses “Show seller’s number”, including visitors who are not signed in, and is hidden once you mark the car sold or withdraw it.
- From the postcode field, only the area (district and first half of the postcode) is shown, never the full postcode. Photos are resized and their hidden location data removed before upload.
- Everything else you add — the title, seller name, description, photo reasons and the photos themselves — is shown to buyers. Keep phone numbers, addresses and other personal details out of it. Obvious phone numbers and full postcodes in the text are checked for, but not everything can be caught, and photos aren’t checked, so look at what’s visible in each picture (for example house numbers or paperwork).
- “My listings” shows how many visitors revealed your number. That’s a measure of interest, not a count of calls or sales.
- Where a “Find vehicle” button is shown next to the registration, it asks the DVSA MOT history service for the make, model and year of manufacture. Your plate is sent only when you press it, and it only fills fields you’ve left empty. It isn’t a history, ownership, write-off or damage check — you can always type the details yourself.
- Trade-only listings are available to businesses after a manual check.
Insurance buy-backs
- “Already bought back” means the seller declares that retention is complete and they have authority to sell. BAJ has not verified insurer agreements or ownership.
- “Buy-back pending” is an enquiry advert for an insurer-confirmed Cat N or S offer. Availability remains subject to the insurer’s agreement. No deposits or payments should be taken through these adverts.
- Use current vehicle and damage photos you took or have permission to publish. The same minimum of 8 photos applies. Keep claim letters, settlement figures and private documents out of the photos and description.
- Agree the retention arrangements with your insurer. The buy-back may be handled through a settlement deduction or another arrangement; BAJ does not arrange this or provide an insurer payment link.
- Once retention is complete, use Edit in My listings to change the status and confirm your authority. If the vehicle’s condition or photos have changed, withdraw and create an accurate new listing before selling.
- Buyers should inspect the car and establish the seller’s authority before payment. This pilot has no checkout, escrow, buyer fee or payment protection.
Write-off categories
- Cat S — repairable structural damage. Cat N — repairable non-structural damage. Check GOV.UK for what’s needed before a repaired car goes back on the road.
- Cat C and Cat D — older categories used before October 2017.
- Cat A — the whole vehicle must be scrapped; no parts can be reused.
- Cat B — the body shell must be crushed, though some parts may be salvaged.
- Cat A and Cat B cars cannot be listed on BAJ Motors.
- “Not recorded — seller declared” is the seller’s own statement. It is not a history check.
Buying and collecting safely
- See the car in person where it’s kept. Check that the V5C logbook, VIN and seller details match.
- Don’t pay a deposit or the full price before seeing the car and its documents. Be wary of anyone asking you to pay a third party, or to use a “delivery” or “holding” service.
- MOT history doesn’t show write-offs, outstanding finance or theft. Consider a vehicle history check from a provider of your choice.
- Don’t assume a damaged, faulty or MOT-failed car can be driven. Confirm whether it rolls, steers and brakes, and plan recovery or a trailer.
- Take someone with you, meet in daylight, and report anything suspicious using the form on the listing.
BAJ Motors does not take part in the sale, handle money or guarantee any car or transaction.

Pending buy-back offers
An offer is an indication of interest, not a contract, reservation or commitment to pay. The seller has not completed the buy-back and it may not happen. Seller information remains unverified.
Signed-in buyers can send an offer, track it in My offers and withdraw it. Sellers can see amounts on their own cars, without the buyer’s identity. BAJ can review enquiries, but no review status approves payment or confirms ownership. You can send a new offer after withdrawing the previous one.
Offer amounts, listing references, account identifiers and review status are stored to run the pilot. BAJ’s owner can access the review queue. Closed or withdrawn offers are removed on the next offer submission once they are 90 days old. No buyer contact details are shared through offers. BAJ review actions are logged for 90 days, with older entries removed on the next offer submission.
